SUMMARY:Building Respectful Communities: Transcending Hate
DESCRIPTION:Please join a "Not in Our Kittitas County" Community Event on Tuesday\, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Central Washington University and the Ellensburg community are joining together to address hate with presentations and open discussion. The keynote speaker Richard King\, a Critical Culture and Gender and Race Studies professor at WSU\, will present "Understanding Racial Violence and Intimidation: White Supremacist Movements in the Pacific Northwest." Lecia J. Brooks\, from the Southern Poverty Law Center will give an update (via Skype) on Klan and white supremacists' activity in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest\, as well as strategies for responding to hate incidents. Cynthia Mitchell\, CWU Communications Department\, and students from the First Amendment Class will present on "Freedom for the Speech we hate." Following the presentations\, there will be an open discussion including input from the Ellensburg and CWU Police Department\; Dale Miller (EPD Chief)\, Clay Meyes (Undersheriff) and Mike Luvera (CWU Police). Not in Our Kittco promotes working together to build safe and inclusive environments for all   in our towns\, in our businesses and in our schools.
