SUMMARY:CWU Queer Film Series presents "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin"
DESCRIPTION:The CWU Center for Diversity and Student Justice (CDSJ) kicks off their Queer Film Series with a free screening of "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin" Tuesday\, Jan. 14 at 5 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation (SURC) Pit. Although his name lacks the familiarity of other major civil rights leaders\, Brother Outsider reveals the personal and political story of visionary activist and strategist Bayard Rustin. An adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, one of the first ?freedom riders? and an organizer of the March of Washington\, Rustin was denied public notoriety and forced to remain in the background for one reason ? he was gay. "Brother Outsider" combines archival film footage\, interviews and Rustin?s extensive FBI records to tell the story of how he advocated human and gay rights during the civil rights movement. Known as ?the unknown hero\,? Rustin was a figure who existed on the outside of one of the most important moments in our nation's history because of his decision to live as an openly gay man during the brutally homophobic 1940s\, 50s and 60s. Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival\, "Brother Outsider" has won over 25 awards\, including the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary. Don?t miss the opportunity to learn about the man who was shunned by the very civil rights movement he helped create. For more information contact the CDSJ at diversity@cwu.edu.
