DESCRIPTION:Having suffered through a first-hand account of the Holocaust\, Dr. Edith Eger?s story is one of survival and resilience and on Wednesday\, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Ballroom\, she will discuss her experiences with the CWU and Ellensburg communities. Eger?s presentation is sponsored by the CWU Center for Diversity and Social Justice (CDSJ)\, the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (CLCE) and the Office of the Provost. This event is free and open to the public. As a Jewish teenager living in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe in 1944\, Eger and her family were sent to the infamous Auschwitz death camp by Hitler?s regime\, where both of her parents sadly perished. But she survived\, and towards the end of the war Eger was rescued by an American soldier from a camp in Austria\, where she and other prisoners had been transferred. Now an author\, a doctor and a prolific public speaker\, Eger?s experiences and story of survival has garnered her national and worldwide reverence\, with numerous television appearances\, international speaking engagements and the biographical focus of a Dutch National Television holocaust documentary. Eger?s visit offers attendees the opportunity to hear a first-hand account of one of the most profound crimes in modern history\, triumph over tragedy and ascent to success.
