SUMMARY:Third Thursday Thinks by Iron Horse Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Central Washington University College of Arts and Humanities & Iron Horse Brewery Present:\n\n\n\nThird Thursday Thinks at the Iron Horse Pub (412 N Main St.)\n\nStarting at 7:00pm \n\n\n\nApril 21st: \n\n\n\n\nAmbiguous Identities: Distinguishing Who's Who in a Refugee Camp in Eastern Africa Dr. Geraldine O'Mahony CAH Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies / Douglas Honors College \n\nDr. O'Mahony will discuss her experiences working in refugee camps in Tanzania and Kenya in the late 90s. One topic she will address is the challenges she and her team faced in trying to distinguish between people displaced by con ict and people who perpetrated con ict: warlords\, soldiers\, and other war criminals. As an aid worker\, she and others struggled to provide the best possible care while balancing humanitarian concerns with the health and safety of camp residents. In this talk\, O'Mahony engages with the challenges\, dif culties\, and moments of joy that came from working with a refugee population. \n\n\n\nMay 19th: \n\n\n\n\nAdvocating for Music: Why Bother? \n\nDr. Jeff Snedeker CAH Department of Music \n\nWhen asked\, most say that music is essential\, that life without music would just be existence. Why then is it one of the rst things to be cut from school curricula? This presentation looks at the ups and downs of advocating for music. \n\n\n\nJune 16th:\n\n\n\n\nUsing History to Make Slavery History \n\nDr. Stacey Robertson Dean of the CWU College of Art and Humanities \n\nDespite the fact that slavery is illegal everywhere\, millions of people are bought\, sold\, detained\, coerced\, and uncompensated. Indeed\, some estimate that there are more than 27 million enslaved people in the modern world. In Lincoln's day\, thousands of ordinary citizens devoted their lives to battling slavery. From the role of survivors to the importance of leveraging the media\, their legacy offers a fuller\, historically grounded understanding of slavery that can inspire and inform a new antislavery movement.
