SUMMARY:Tyrone Howard: The Peril and Promise in the Education of Black Males
DESCRIPTION:Tyrone Howard\, Ph.D. will be addressing\, The Peril and Promise in the Education of Black Males\, on Monday\, Apr. 25 at Central Washington University. His talk will speak to the academic\, social and economic issues that plague black males at an early age and grow increasingly worse over time\, resulting in a significant increase in dropout rates\, under employment and over incarceration of our African American youth. The lecture will be held in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Theatre at 7 p.m. and will be free and open to the public. Howard\, a graduate of the University of Washington\, is the founder and director of the Black Male Institute. He is an education professor and an associate faculty member in the Bunche Center for African American studies at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Howard is also the faculty associate director for the Academic Advancement Program at UCLA\, the nation's leading student retention program for underrepresented students. Howard is the author of\, "Why Race and Culture Matters in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in America's Classrooms.? He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and other academic publications. His published research has been featured in The Journal of Higher Education\, Teachers College Record\, Theory & Research in Social Education\, The Journal of Negro Education\, Urban Education and several other well-regarded academic journals. This talk is part of the CWU Social Justice and Human Rights Series. This year?s theme\, Mass Incarceration and Racial Justice: Black and Brown Lives Do Matter\, seeks to educate Central?s community and spark discussions about race and equality.
