College Civics Week
To help the CWU and local communities become active citizens and educated voters, the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (CLCE) is set to host College Civics Week with events Monday, May 2 through Thursday, May 5. All events are free and open to the public. With panel discussions, debates and educational activities, getting involved in the week?s activities is a must for everyone. All week, there will be displays and tabling throughout the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) displaying information about student government candidates, the week?s events, legislature history, civic education and more, such as a quiz that places your beliefs on the political spectrum. College Civics Week Schedule of Events: Monday, May 2 Senator Patty Murray Video All Day | SURC Pit A video, made by Senator Patty Murray for Central students, will play throughout the day. Donkey vs Elephant Match 6 - 7 p.m. | SURC Pit Votes can be cast, for either the Democratic or Republican Party, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the results of the poll will be revealed by who wins the Donkey vs Elephant Match. Tuesday, May 3 College Democrats and College Republicans Debate 12 - 1:30 p.m. | SURC Pit Two CWU clubs will debate, as a way to educate voters, with a focus on higher education. Wednesday, May 4 State Representative Speaker Panel 12 - 1:30 p.m. | SURC Pit Learn about important and current issues with State Representatives from both parties. Panel participants: Larry Haler (R-Dist 8), Matt Manweller (R-Dist 13), Hans Zieger (R-Dist 25), Drew Hansen (D-Dist 23), Gerry Pollet (D-Dist 46) and Timm Ormsby (D-Dist 3).
