Sexual Slavery in the Wartime Japanese Empire: The Historical Record and the Politics of Memory

A panel of concerned scholars will review the historical evidence about wartime sexual slavery and explore current struggles over historical memory, in the context of international attention to human rights, trafficking, and violence against women.
Panelists: Dr. Bang-Soon Yoon, CWU Political Science; Dr. Chong Eun Ahn, CWU History; Dr. Anne Cubilié, CWU William O. Douglas Honors College; Dr. Mark Auslander, CWU Anthropology and Museum Studies; Dr. Yukiko Shigeto, Whitman College Foreign Languages and Literatures; Dr. Davinder Bhowmik, UW Asian Languages and Literature; and Dr. Justin Jesty, UW Asian Languages and Literature. Moderator: Dr. Stacey Robertson, CWU Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities.
A keynote, "Sex, State and Women's Human Rights Movement: The 'Comfort Women' Case," will be delivered by Dr. Bang-Soon Yoon.
The panel will be preceded by two programs in the SURC Pit: a short (30 min.) film, "The Butterflies: Flying High With Hope" at 5:30 p.m. and readings of victims' testimonies about the "Comfort Women" system at 6 p.m.
