CWU Pays Tribute to Nelson Mandela
Join the CWU Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (CLCE) as they pay tribute to Nelson Mandela, late president of South Africa and social advocate for the country?s independence from apartheid, Monday, Feb. 9 through Friday, Feb. 13 in the CWU Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC). Events will include an interactive display, a panel discussion and film screenings. These events are free and open to the public. Monday, Feb. 9 to Friday, Feb. 13: ?One Team, One Country? ? Experience the life of Nelson Mandela and see how you can make a difference. Visit SURC 137A from noon to 2 p.m. and place your handprint on a quilt to honor Nelson Mandela. Tuesday, Feb. 10: ?Fair Play: Have You Heard from Johannesburg? ? The fourth installment of a seven-film series on the history of South Africa, this film focuses on the true story of the anti-apartheid international rugby boycott, a movement that deeply affected the fate of the nation. Playing continuously from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in SURC 137B. Wednesday, Feb. 11: ?Sports, Race and Social Justice: Reflecting on Nelson Mandela?s Legacy and Prospects for Non-Violent Social Change? ? A panel of speakers reflecting on lessons learned from Nelson Mandela and on non-violent action for social transformation. Panelists include: Dr. Keith Champagne, CWU Associate Dean of Student Development; Dr. Jay Ball, Assistant Director, CWU Theatre Arts; Anne Cubilie, Director, CWU Douglas Honors College; Dr. Mark Auslander, Associate Professor, CWU Anthropology. 6 p.m. in SURC 137B. Thursday, Feb. 12: ?A Long Nights Journey into Day? ? This documentary film showcases South Africa?s attempts to heal the wounds of apartheid. Playing continuous from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in SURC 137B.
