Drug Wars: Incarceration and Racial Justice, A Roundtable Discussion
The CWU Museum of Culture and Environment welcomes Racial Disparity Project Lead Program Director Kris Nyrop Thursday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m. for a round table discussion examining racial disparities in drug-related sentencing in the United States and potential models for sentencing reform. This event is free and open to the public. The talk is in conjunction with the Museum's current exhibition, "Righteous Dopefiend: Homelessness, Addiction and Poverty in Urban America,? on display in Dean Hall, first floor, through Saturday, March 21. Nyrop was the Executive Director of Street Outreach Services in Seattle from 1997-2007. Prior to that he worked for the Washington State Department of Health, Public Health of Seattle and King County and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the University of Washington. Nyrop was also the project ethnographer for the Vancouver Injection Drug User Study from 1997 to 1999. He has worked as an outreach worker, researcher, and trainer in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, hepatitis C prevention, syringe exchange, harm reduction, and drug policy reform. Additionally, he has consulted with projects throughout the U.S. as well as in Canada, Russia, and the Republic of Georgia.
