Out of the Locker: The Queer Community and Intercollegiate Athletics Discussion
A discussion panel in response to the "You Can Play" video recently released by the CWU Athletics Department will be held on February 12 at 4 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Pit. The video, created in partnership with the national You Can Play Project, is intended to, promote inclusiveness in college athletics regardless of sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The discussion is free and open to the public. The event will be a moderated discussion on topics and issues that LGBTQIA+ students might potentially face when participating in intercollegiate athletics, what the CWU community is currently doing and how they might better address those issues. The event will be moderated by Nikki Marra, EQuAl advisor, KCWU program director and Chair of the CWU Pride Committee. Other panel members include representatives from CWU Athletics and EQuAl, as well as Conner Mertens, hailed as the first American college football player to publicly come ?out,? and Olivia Durham, ASCWU Student Government VP for Equity and Community Affairs. This event is sponsored by the EQuAl and KCWU 88.1 The ?Burg.
