Queer Film Series at CWU: "Paris is Burning"
The CWU Center for Diversity and Justice (CDSJ) will kick of their 2015 Queer Film Series with the critically acclaimed movie "Paris is Burning." The documentary chronicles the LGBTQIA+ subculture of drag balls in New York City in the mid-to-late 1980s, where people would dress in drag or dress up as a people from other cultures and compete for prizes in different categories. The film will be shown on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 5 p.m. in the CWU Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) room 137. Attendance is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. Critics have called ?Paris is Burning? an invaluable documentary of the end of the "Golden Age" of New York City drag balls, as it is an exploration of race, class, gender and sexuality in the United States. By showing the film, CDSJ will continue to promote acceptance of diversity not just at CWU, but also in the world at large.
