SUMMARY:CWU Wind Ensemble Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Central Washington University Wind Ensemble will present its final concert of the academic year on Thursday\, June 4\, 2026\, at 7:00 p.m. in Hertz Concert Hall\, located in the McIntyre Music Building. Directed by T. Andr Feagin\, Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music\, the performance is free and open to the public and invites both the campus and greater Ellensburg community to attend. The program highlights the richness and diversity of American wind band repertoire\, featuring works by Eric Whitacre\, Ulysses S. Kay\, and David Maslanka. These composers represent distinct voices within the American tradition\, offering a range of musical styles that reflect both innovation and deep expressive character. The concert will also feature first-year graduate conducting student Tyler White\, providing an opportunity to highlight emerging talent within the program. A central highlight of the evening is the residency of award-winning composer James M. David\, who will serve as composer-in-residence for the CWU band program. During his week-long visit\, Dr. David will work closely with the Wind Ensemble in rehearsals and collaborate with graduate conducting students\, offering a unique educational and artistic experience. His residency will culminate in performances of his works\, including his Symphony No. 2\, The Road is Life. Symphony No. 2 is inspired by the Beat Generation writers of the mid-20th century and reflects on themes of American identity\, culture\, and social tension. Structured in four movements\, the piece functions as a musical "road trip\," with each movement drawing inspiration from a different poet and city: New York\, New Orleans\, Colorado\, and San Francisco. The work blends jazz influences with contemporary wind band writing and vivid musical imagery\, exploring ideas of freedom\, unrest\, spirituality\, and renewal. Commissioned by a consortium of wind conductors\, the symphony is dedicated to composers David Amram and Sammy Nestico.
