KEEN's GISS Bird fest
Rattlesnakes, sagebrush and stoneflies…oh my! The 22nd Annual Get Intimate with the Shrub-Steppe (GISS) at the Yakima Canyon Interpretive Center @ Helen McCabe State Park is set for Saturday May 8th this year from 9:00am to 1:00pm. This year we’re merging with the Yakima River Canyon Bird Fest with expert-led field trips and online presentations as well! All free and all fun! Get ready to hop, soar, swim, skip, or slither your way to the Yakima River Canyon and join the Kittitas Environmental Education Network (KEEN) for a fun-filled day of exploration for learners of all ages into our unique shrub-steppe environment and the Yakima River watershed. KEEN has some fun new activities planned for our 22nd year! KEEN’s expert-led field trips are pre-register, and carpool only. Please pre-register from KEEN’s website at www.ycic.org. The largest gathering of environmental and conservation educational booths along with live raptors, snakes, reptiles, and river bugs & fish can be found at the Yakima Canyon Interpretive Center @ Helen McCabe State Park. Participants can experience the unique ecosystems that influence and interact with the Yakima River watershed through hands-on science learning and expert-guided field trips into the surrounding shrub-steppe habitat. Fish, beavers, native plants, lichen, history, and of course, snake-sneaking are featured this year. Take advantage of our local experts as they share their knowledge about the endangered shrub-steppe habitat that surrounds us!
