Equipment Mechanic

Recruitment Description: 
The City of Ellensburg is accepting applications for an Equipment Mechanic. 
 
The purpose of this position is to ensure the City’s fleet of vehicles and equipment are safe and dependable.  This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment, perform diagnostic procedures and repairs, and ensure that other departments are able to perform their jobs more efficiently. 
 

  • Test, service, and repair mechanical components/systems such as brakes, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, air, exhaust, chassis, etc. using diagnostic instruments, hand, electric, and air driven tools; perform body repair and related work; cut/weld metal and fabricate parts, frames, and related items; provide emergency field assistance and repair to disabled equipment/vehicles. 
  • Schedule and provide preventive maintenance and/or repair on equipment and vehicles in the most cost-effective manner. 
  • Research cost to purchase parts and supplies needed for repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles and to maintain adequate parts inventory; assist in budget development to provide adequate inventory. 
  • Work with external vendors to complete work outside the capacity of the mechanic’s shop. 
  • Assist other departments when needed; repair gates, hand railing, and other miscellaneous maintenance items; fabricate and install ADA equipment.
 
This is a full-time, benefited position.  Benefits include medical, dental, life, and disability insurance; Retirement under the Washington State Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), VEBA, vacation, sick leave, holidays, and employee choice days.   This position is represented by Teamster’s Local Union #760. 
 
Salary:  $27.27-$36.36/hour
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school
  • One (1) year of related mechanic experience
  • One (1) year of air brake repair experience or training
  • Please note:  an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or special training may be considered in lieu of the minimum requirements listed above at the discretion of management.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Journey level experience in the mechanical trade
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certified
 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Valid State Driver’s License including Commercial Driver’s License - Class A with Tanker endorsement -must maintain insurable driving record.  Employee will be required to have a CDL within 6 months of employment at the expense of the employee with the option to borrow the expense of training from the City with a signed loan agreement
  • Flagging Card or ability to obtain within six (6) months
  • First Aid/CPR, or ability to obtain within six (6) months
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:    
  • The successful applicant must supply their own hand tools and toolbox.  A monthly tool replacement fee is available in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. 
  • The City of Ellensburg is required by federal regulation to administer a testing program for controlled substance and alcohol use for employees required to have and maintain a CDL.  This position is covered under the City of Ellensburg Substance Abuse Testing Policy.
