CWU Chamber Orchestra Presents Concerto Competition Winner Chris Ward
The CWU Chamber Orchestra will present its winter concert on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. The program will feature two works, Igor Stravinsky?s ballet, "Apollo Musagete" and Pierre Max Dubois' Concerto for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra. The concerto will highlight one of the winners of the Department of Music?s 2008 concerto competition, saxophonist Chris Ward. A double major in wind performance and music education, Ward is currently in his last quarter at the CWU while completing his student teaching in Vancouver. Stravinski?s "Apollo Musagete," originally choreographed by George Balanchine in 1928, tells the story of Apollo and the instructions he gives to three of the nine muses, those sister goddesses of Greek mythology presiding over song, poetry, the arts and sciences: Calliope, the music of poetry, Polyhymnia, the muse of sacred song, Calliope, the muse of epic poetry and Terpsichore, the muse of dance. The free concert will be held in the Central Washington University Music Building Concert Hall. Persons of disability may make arrangements for reasonable accommodation by calling (509) 963-1251 or (for hearing impaired) (509) 963-2143.
