The sounds of traditional Native American drums and songs will fill the air on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the CWU Friendship Gathering and Pow Wow. The Center for Diversity and Social Justice (CDSJ), the Department of Film Studies and the Muckleshoot Casino are hosting this event, and invite the CWU and Ellensburg communities to join in the celebration of Native American culture, while learning about Native American traditions and history. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the East Science Lawn at CWU there will be a variety of events and activities for all ages. From dancing and storytelling to a special performance by one of the Black Lodge Singers, a Grammy nominated Native American northern drum group, there will be entertainment for all. Attendees are welcome to come to the event at 10 a.m. and peruse the vendors until the grand entry at 10:30 a.m. Following the grand entry, there will be honor, exhibition and social dances throughout the day, as well as a sign language performance and Native American storytelling. There will be plenty of entertainment for children, including arts and crafts and special activities for children eight and under. One of the Black Lodge Singers will perform traditional pow wow songs, some of which are for children. All attendees are invited to join in the friendship feast, which is a traditional meal in which people get to know one another and celebrate each other?s cultures.
