CWU Percussion Ensemble Presents a Night of Percussion
On Thursday, Feb. 26, the Central Washington University Percussion Ensemble will present their free Winter Concert in the Music Department?s fabulous Concert Hall. The 7 p.m. program, under the direction of faculty percussionist Mark Goodenberger, will feature two magnificent performances not to be missed. Denise Dillenbeck performs as violin soloist in Lou Harrison?s Concerto for Violin with Percussion Orchestra. Dillenbeck, who recently moved to Ellensburg after performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra for 4 years, will showcase this monumental piece. Written in 1961, the work uses mostly non-pitched instruments in the percussion orchestra: gongs, spring coils, steel pipes, trash cans, coffee cans, flower pots, brake drums and even a string bass suspended and struck with drum sticks make up the fascinating sounds in the accompaniment. In addition, the ensemble will perform Release by Dave Hollinden. This work was commissioned by the CWU Percussion Ensemble in 1995 and was performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention that same year. It is a challenging, gripping piece for 8 percussionists that takes the listener through the different stages of the loss of a loved one. Persons of disability may make arrangements for reasonable accommodation by calling (509) 963-1618 or (for hearing impaired) TDD (509) 963-2143.
