Music Antiqua concert series begins at CWU

Music Antiqua concert series begins at CWU September 12, 2008 Contact: Hal Ott, (509) 963-1103, fax: (509) 963-1239, email: otth@cwu.edu ELLENSBURG, Wash.-The 2008-09 Music Antiqua concert series will begin this year on Saturday, September 27, at 7:00 p.m. with a concert entitled, ?Prodigal Sons: Music by Celebrated Law School Dropouts Who Disappointed Their Parents.? This free concert will be performed in the Recital Hall in the CWU Music Building located on the corner of Nicholson and Alder. The three composers on this program, Christoph Graupner, Johann Friedrich Fasch, and Georg Philipp Telemann, had a great deal in common. In addition to being consummate musicians and composers, they were good friends; they met in Leipzig where they received law degrees and then each subsequently gave up law to become professional musician/composers. They each composed much music, but were especially prolific in the composition of chamber music of the time, sonatas for one or two melodic instruments, and a "continuo" part, i.e., a bass line played by cello or bassoon and a keyboard instrument, usually harpsichord, filling in the harmonies as well. It is this music that will be performed at this concert. Performers will be recorder player and Baroque oboist Jim Rich from Eugene, Oregon, cellist Jen Yonge from Olympia, Washington, and CWU faculty members harpsichordist and violinist Margret Gries, traverso and recorder player Hal Ott, hornist Jeffrey Snedeker, bassoonist Daniel Lipori, violinist Heather Netz, violist Timothy Betts, and harpsichordist Nikolas Caoile.
