Dr. O’Mahony will discuss her experiences working in refugee camps in Tanzania and Kenya in the late 90s. One topic she will address is the challenges she and her team faced in trying to distinguish between people displaced by con ict and people who perpetrated con ict: warlords, soldiers, and other war criminals. Using History to Make Slavery History
Dr. Stacey Robertson • Dean of the CWU College of Art and Humanities
Despite the fact that slavery is illegal everywhere, millions of people are bought, sold, detained, coerced, and uncompensated. Indeed, some estimate that there are more than 27 million enslaved people in the modern world. In Lincoln’s day, thousands of ordinary citizens devoted their lives to battling slavery. From the role of survivors to the importance of leveraging the media, their legacy offers a fuller, historically grounded understanding of slavery that can inspire and inform a new antislavery movement.
